There are several national LTL carriers who
deliver nationally and regionally.
Regional carriers transport cargo only within a particular region,
whereas national
carriers transport cargo over 1,000s of miles without interlining packages
with other
transportation companies.
There are also other options shippers have such as using freighted if
there is a critical transit time. Some logistics companies offer
programs with discounts for multiple packages that are going to the same
delivery address.
LTL shipments can be transported overseas by using a consolidation
service, which
utilizes sea cargo containers. Because of the distance traveled, ocean
freight requires longer transit times, however NVOCCs (Non-Vessel
Operating Common Carrier)
provide reduced rates for general cargo. Freight forwarding companies
can provide
rate quotes for cargo, which is shipped in this manner. Freight
forwarding companies
can also provide house bills of lading and other documentation
required for shipment. It is the shippers responsibility to provide
commercial invoices, AES information, and packing lists to the freight
forwarding company. If the cargo contains hazardous materials or
shipping under a letter of credit, then the shipper must inform the
freight forwarder of this when they contact the forwarder and initiate
the shipment.
